Official Virtua Fighter 5 Thread 330693ps

Fisticuffs. You always need two protagonists. In real life or as a digital representation. And over the years, there have been sooooo many different videogame fighters, fighting it out to be top of the tree, it is untrue. From Street Fighter to Mortal Kombat. From King of Fighters to Marvel vs Capcom. And from Tekken to Virtua Fighter. And for the first time, I have had a console that actually plays host to a Virtua Fighter game. And I am chuffed.

The demo is out, and the game looks quite simply sublime. I cannot put into words how satisfying it looks to beat seven shades of blue out of your opponent. As is the norm for modern fighting games, prepare yourself for a comprehensive moves list for each character. So comprehensive in fact, that you are best suited to learning each character one at a time. And once you are competent with that one, that is when the real learning can start. This is not a fighting game that gives easily.

But the trade-off is that once you become fluent in Virtual pugilism, you can take to Xbox Live and proceed to get a pasting so humiliating, that you may decide that a Wii is the console for you. But after your first defeat, you will go back And why? Because this game is peerless. Without equal. A true superstar in its genre. And it rewards you for getting better by allowing you to read your opponents and punishing their mistakes. Did your opponent stick his left foot out too far? Step on his toe, slap him on the back of his head and laugh as half his energy bar is gone. And if you managed to do that to a monosyllabic japanese teen, congratulate yourself. You are a superstar amongst gamers.

As you can tell, I am a little excited by this game. I have spent many, many 50p coins at the Trocadero in London on this game and all its previous versions . And the thought that I shall have it in my home soon is too much anticipation for me. 17 characters? Leaderboards? Online and offline multiplayer? Mister Gates, you truly are spoiling us.
Kids, if there is only one game that you will buy this year, this has to be it.

Maybe I should put more thought into these official threads. But yes, Virtua Fighter 5 is just a fighting game. As you can imagine, by being on its 5th title, Virtua Fighter has been around for a very long time. The first game came out in 1993 and used to look like this:

And please believe that this used to be cutting edge. When this first came out, I was like, whoa! Tekken 1 came out around that time as well, and the graphics were quite similar, but it was a faster game. Then came Virtua Fighter 2, just two years later and the graphics had gone one step further, and again I was like WHOA!

By the time Virtua Fighter 3 came out, I was again impressed.

And by the time Virtua Fighter 4 came out, the graphics had evolved to the level that we can now enjoy onthe Xbox360.

So I suppose it is not just "fighting, then", it's more like a tradition. Enjoy.

Ah well. If you don't like fighting games, you don't like fighting games. Personally speakin, that has been my favourite genre since Street Fighter. Having to learn 40 moves per character for that game, all the way to an incredible 90 moves per character for Dead or Alive 3, I have always enjoyed being able to out-fight and out-think my opponent.

Now, I know this is a different game, but this little video shows how great s superb victory can be. Check out Ken's energy in the fight below. Remember, this is some sort of semi-final, Ken has not even enough energy to block 5 fireballs and he has the balls to reverse a supermove?

Absolutely unbelievable.

Pimp you couldn't be more wrong!

Here why:

Dead Or Alive
Putting the obvious graphical differences aside here Dead Or Alive can frustrate the crap out of me! In my opinion Dead Or Alive is simply a button bashing fighting game where winning is mainly based on how fast you can mash the buttons...or break your pad lol. Apart from that your AI opponent always seems to kick your butt even if you still have full health and they have about 1cm left. Its a classic case of what most gamers would call 'cheating AI'

Tekken
Being honest here I have never played a Tekken game but I have watched it being played plenty of times. Again many gamers would call this a button bashing fighting game where winning is based on luck and chance.

Ok now onto Virtua Fighter 5.

In another thread I stated that I wouldn't taint my console or gamer profile with this game. I was assured that I would like it for the customization options in here. I mean who doesn't like to personalize their characters in game? I tried this game last night and ended up playing it for hours! So far I have a perfect 100% winning streak!
This game is far from being a button bashing fighter either. If you did decide to go down that route and pummel your pad like theres no tomorrow chances are you will lose repeatedly! You need skill and to be able to remember at least some combo moves to be able to succeed.

Try the demo for Dead or Alive...then try the demo for Virtua Fighter 5, THEN come back and tell me they're the same!

Well, thanks for supporting my VF love.

I suppose, one thing to say is that it is a shame that DOA frustrates the hell out of you. I take it you meant DOA4. There are strategies and decent moves hidden behind the moving mammaries and like with everything, it just takes patience and perseverence. But I think that DOA3 was actually a much, much better game. DOA Ultimate and DOA4 basically destroyed the one thing that made the game stand out for me, which was the ability to do reversals. In VF5, only a few characters can do reversals. In DoA3, everyone could do it.

You basically had to be able to read every attack coming your way and decide whether it was a high, medium or low attack. Time it right and then press the reversal button with the corresponding high, medium or low directional press. If you understood that mechanic, and had a healthy understanding of the different combos on offer for each character, you could very quickly tell the difference between a button-masher and a person that knew the game quite well.

DoA4 basically crippled the reversal system by introducing a fourth reversal. Where previously you had to press either high, medium or low and the reversal button, now you also had to press forward and reversal for certain moves. Which was crappy. Since pressingback made you block, pressing forward got you hit. They reduced the time window for nailing reversals and speeded up the game. To the point where it is virtually unplayable, because it made more sense to button-mash than to use strategies.

Boo. Never have I been so disappointed with a sequel. Just my two cents. But yes, VF5 is good and I will be working my way through that for a very long time.

Yup I meant DoA4 Mad

I used to have DoA2 on Playstation 2 and enjoyed that one, was much more approachable.

Benjamin still has the Original Virtua Fighter 1 & 2 for his Sega Saturn as well as the Remix version. So we know first hand what it looks like in motion.
